Blue economy: New approaches to restoring marine biodiversity

Financing needs to protect marine ecosystems are very high today. In the light of recent experience in various countries, the involvement of private players and financing, alone or in conjunction with other public or philanthropic institutions, can complement and reinforce the action of governments and international organizations in favor of the environment and biodiversity.

The question of mobilizing private players and funding highlights the particular importance of finding technical and operational ways to give economic and monetary value to marine ecosystems, not for extractive purposes, but with a logic and approach that encourage protection. In this note, we intend to present promising initiatives and innovations that may be of interest in Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean and worth considering in the context of the ongoing reflection on nature conservation and restoration, as well as regarding the preparation of the Monaco Forum on Blue Economy and Finance, which will precede the UN Ocean Conference in Nice in June 2025.
